Home Security - make your home secure
How to secure your home
What if things got really bad with what's going on with our economic situation. Even the best of people may turn to theft if they are hungery and need to feed their family, not to mention the bad guys who see fit to take advantage of a bad situation. So you may have to be more protective of your property and family and take extra steps to increase security and awareness. You should try to make your home as secure as possible so intruders will move on to easier targets.
Light up your property
Using security lights
Security lights outside that have motion detectors are a good idea and should be used. Solar powered security lights with motion detection are available and great tom have if the power is out. Make sure the lights cover what would be the dark areas of your property. There are remote, wireless sensors available that have receivers that you screw into light socket with bulb screwed into sensor. You would then place the motion detector in a location of your choice. The solar lights are not the best or longest lasting but they are sure great when the power is out so you have some protection, better than nothing at all.
Prowler detected by motion light
If someone is at your door, check them out through your peep hole and talk to them through the door - you do not have to open the door. Its sad that we can't trust prople the way it used to be , there are alot of scamers out there to take advantage of us. Use precautions and if you have a bad feeling about someone at your door, heed it.
Securing your landscape
For home security you should plant thorny plants or bushes under or around windows and around areas that you feel would be areas of approach to help you control an intruders movement. If you have a fence, plant some thorny plants along the fence to make it harder to climb. If you have alot of plants in your yard that would provide hiding places for someone, consider removing some or thinning them out. If you wish to keep all your landscaping, maybe you could string wire among the plants to create trip hazards or make it difficult to sneek through.
Dogs and other animals
Dogs can be good for alerting you of something wrong outside, they have an uncanny sense of hearing something that is not right. Even a small dog makes a good alarm even if too small to help defend you.. A large dog would be more capable of defending you. If you have a dog that barks at any noise it hears, it will do no good at alerting you of a problem, you will not know what's for real. Even if you have a close neighbor with a dog, it will be of benefit to you.
If you do not have a dog, you could even put out large food and water bowls as if there is a dog on the property.
Doors and windows
Your doors and windows may not be secure enough. If your doors open outward, they are more difficult to break into. It makes them hard to kick in because the force is into the door frame. Doors that open inward have only the lock and dead bolt holding it in place and are easier to break in. If your door opens inward you can get security bars to help strengthen the door frame. Locks are not always secure, most can be easily picked or destroyed to gain entry to the home, choose a lock with ANSI Grade 1 classification . Make sure you install a peep hole in the doors if you do not have one. Research on line to find the best methods to secure your doors and windows.
